Reefs and Coastal Communities: A Global Resource
Fijian coastal villagers have lived in a symbiotic relationship with their
lagoons and fringing reefs for generations. Population growth, unusually
warm water temperatures, global fishing fleets, sewage, and resource exploitation are threatening the health of the reefs and the contiguous communities.
Coral reefs and aquatic diversity are global resources. “Sasalu Tawamudu” is Fijian and
refers to the spiritual and everlasting reef resources. Sustainable Fijian Reef Resourcesis a US registered not-for-profit corporation (501c3) founded by college professors and scientists, whose goals are to enhance
awareness of the current perils of the reefs, to disseminate education about the various components of this fragile and beautiful ecosystem, and to generate and target resources for loca˝
lly managed and locally implemented projects of
environmental regeneration and sustainable development.
We invite you to explore our site, and to learn about Fiji, the coastal ecosystems, the innovative projects underway to preserve and regenerate the reefs, and the ways that you can help sustain these global resources.
- the replacement of harvested live rock, hacked off the reef flats, with environmentally sustainable culturing of live rock.
- the restoration of giant clams and large herbivorous reef fishes to the marine protected areas (taboo sections of the reef)
- the intervention in strengthening the coastal and reef ecosystems through the planting of mangroves, which function as nursery areas for many reef species
